Traditions and customs are very important to Armenians. They are very affectionate to their children and strongly respect family values. Marriage is a big celebration in Armenia.
The Armenian wedding ceremonies are considered one of the most beautiful, colorful and interesting ones. In ancient times there was a tradition of celebrating the wedding for “seven days and seven nights”. All the neighbors and relatives were present at the wedding ceremony. According to the tradition the groom had to ask the bride’s family for the bride’s hand.
The wedding itself begins in the morning. Being a Christian nation, Armenians consider the blessing of the priest to be the most important part of the wedding. The Armenian wedding ceremony reaches its peak with a unique and beautiful ritual of crowning and exchanging the rings. Crowns are placed on the heads of the bride and groom as a symbol of their own kingdom being formed. A pair of doves is released which symbolizes love and happiness. In recent years there is a tendency to get married in cozy churches situated in picturesque suburban areas. The popular places are Echmiadzin, Geghard, Harichavank, the churches of Gayane and Hripsime and many others. After the ceremony in the church, the feast begins. At the entrance a couple is traditionally met by the groom’s mother, who throws lavash on the shoulders of bride and groom and offers them honey as a guarantee of a sweet life together.
Armenian wedding receptions start with the introduction of the bride and groom followed by a dance. The abundance of guests at Armenian wedding has always been a must. The wedding is accompanied by a number of various cheerful ceremonies. Some of the most important parts in the Armenian traditional weddings are the ceremony of giving presents and the toasts accompanied by a special expression “may you grow old on one pillow”.
And though nowadays Armenian wedding traditions have undergone a number of changes, much remains the same. Traditional customs and modern approach just turn Armenian weddings into a crazy and memorable event.
