Armenia is one of those unique countries that gives a chance to understand, that art is not a simple imitation of reality. It requires freedom, emotions and imagination. Armenian painting blossomed in the 19th-20 th centuries. Artists of that period (Ivan Aivazovsky, Martiros Saryan, Carzou, Jansem, Arshile Gorky) continue to enjoy international reputation.
Near the opera house, in a small square, there is a park in Yerevan named after Martiros Saryan. The statue of Saryan is located in the center of the park. It was erected in 1986. On weekends it turns into a real open-air market and gallery. It becomes a real center of contemporary art and culture.
A visit to Saryan Park will bring you in touch with modern Armenian artists and their amazing works. Here you can see a lot of Armenian artists showing off their paintings or drawing. You even have opportunity to have your portrait for some price.
The Painters' Vernissage is a cornerstone in the mosaic of the cultural life of Yerevan and a must-see spot during your visit to Armenia.
