Haghpat Monastery, located in the Lori Province of Armenia, dates back to the 10th century. In the middle of 13th century Haghpat became one of the largest educational and religious centers of Armenia. The largest and main church in the complex, the Cathedral of St. Nshan, was built in 967-991. It is a typical example of 10th century Armenian architecture. There are several other structures at the site as well. There is the small domed Church of Sourb Grigor (St. Gregory), two side chapels, a three-story tall free-standing belltower, the chapel of Sourb Astvatsatsin, the scriptorium and the large refectory. There are also several splendid khachkars (cross-stones) in the territory of the monastery, dating back to the 11th-13th centuries.
